So, this last week might be have been the craziest week of my mission so far... SO MUCH HAPPENED.
SISTER SOU AND THE CHINA PILLS: There is a less-active lady in our ward who "fell down the stairs and broke her leg." Nah, JK she didn't break her leg but she did fall down and hurt her head and is now in the hospital. We went to go visit her but it didn't go very well. It started off super awesome but then the nurse left the room and she grabbed my arm and started whispering to me. "You need to grab me those pills. My body hurts and the nurse won't let me take them, so you need to give them to me." Oh sure. Let me grab them for you, SO YOU CAN DIE!! NOOOO. So I told her if the nurse isn't letting her take them she probably shouldn't take them. And she was like, "YOU MAKE ME SAD!!" So I felt awkward. "If you won't give me my pills. Leave." Uh, OK. Well we hope you have a good day. We'll pray for you. It was a strange lesson.
MAJOR CREEPER OF THE WEEK: On New Years Eve we were told to be home by 6:00 PM and do weekly planning then because people in Toronto go a little crazy pants! We had an appointment with Dane at 5:30. I met Dane a while ago in our elevator in our building. He seemed interested so we gave him a card. Well he called us randomly a couple days ago and so we set up an appointment on for New Years Eve at Tim Horton's across the street, because we couldn't find a member to come teaching with us. Well he was bugged he had to leave his house and just kept asking if we could come in. We told him no and asked if we could reschedule for a time when we could bring someone with us. But he just kept asking us if we could meet that night at our apartment. He offered to come over to our apartment. NO!! Anyways, we rescheduled but I guess he didn't really understand.
"What is your door #" WE DID NOT RESPOND
"Just see you go in your place" STARTED FREAKING OUT, BUT DID NOT RESPOND
"OK so I'm coming at your door now." We replied and said, you can't come in.
"Just want to see you girls tonight. I'll just sleep at your door." WE DIDN'T REPLY
"I'm at your door" We hear someone banging at our door. We are freaking out... But didn't answer or talk back to him
"Just come at your door." NOOOOO. HE STARTS CALLING US.
We didn't open the door, talk back to him, answer his calls, or texts and he stayed outside our door for 10 mins!! NO JOKE. We kept looking out our peep hole and he was so obviously drunk. We called our district leader to see if we should do anything. But then Dane left so nothing happened. Anyways, the rest of the night we had a hard time focusing. Plus the Jamaican music was CRAZY LOUD. And it smelt like weed in our apartment. Not cool.
ROOKIE MISTAKE: New Years day was so awesome! We had a busy day with six appointments in a row. And none of them canceled. WOOT WOOT. We didn't have time for dinner so by our last appointment at 8:00 we were kind of dying. We were meeting with Denzel. Since we had a late lesson we were allowed to be home at 9:30. So we were walking home after the appointment, about a 10 mins walk, and when we were outside our apartment at 9:20 I noticed the phone wasn't in my bag. We searched everywhere but we didn't have it. I'm stupid and didn't even think about the time so we started tracing our steps to see if I just dropped it. Well we walked all the way back to Denzel's apartment and still hadn't seen it. So we to the hallway where we were teaching and I assumed it would just be on the floor but it wasn't. At that point it was about 9:40 and we still hadn't found out phone. Yeah, it was BAD. So we knock at Denzel's door to see if he saw it after we left and brought it inside. When we asked him he was like, "yeah, here it is." We were so revealed, until he brought us his phone. NO DENZEL WE NEED OUR PHONE, NOT YOUR PHONE. He didn't have it and I started freaking out that we weren't home so we called our district leader on Denzel's phone and told him we lost our phone and we weren't home. He called President who was super disappointing we weren't inside at 9:30. YES, I FEEL AWFUL! We were told to just get inside and look for it in the morning. The walk back was scary and I felt so unsafe. And we didn't find our phone. We made it inside around 10:10. Seriously, that's so bad! I KNOW. We had about five lessons the next day that we needed to confirm so I was feeling stressed. It was a bad night... To make it worse it snowed that night. Searching for the phone was a little tricky in the morning and we had no success. We went to district meeting and before it started we used our district leaders phone to confirm appointments. He then called the zone leaders so they could get us another phone. It was bad.
CAN'T BREATH: So that night we were in our apartment WITH NO PHONE just filling out teaching records when someone starts pounding on our door! Yeah, my heard totally stopped. We assumed it was drunk Dane again. So we go to look out the peep hole and he had covered it with his hand. So we couldn't see out of it. We were just standing in the door way and then OUR DOOR HANDLE STARTS JIGGLING. He was trying to break in. We were both shaking and my eyes got so watery! Oh my gosh, I'm thinking "we're going to get raped right now. And maybe murdered." He started to open the mail drop and we were just standing there about to cry. We went towards the door again to look out the peep hole again and it was our district leader. Yeah, we were ticked. He thought it was hilarious, but it wasn't. He was bringing our new cell phone but he knew about Dane and decided to be dumb.
PHILEMON'S APARTMENT WITH THE 6 SMELLY MEN: Well remember our investigator Philemon. He's still around but he canceled a couple of appointments so we dropped by his apartment when we were in the area to see how he was doing. The strangest thing happened. The door opened and we were overpowered with the smell of BO. Like never before. Like, I couldn't really breath. And when I focused my eyes I just saw like 6 guys lounging around. I tried to think of what to say but I couldn't really think either... So we just stood there in the doorway. And finally I was like, "Philemon, hi!" They invited us in and we said no so fast. I mean we aren't allowed to but if we were it would still be a quick reply. We invited him to come to church but left quickly. We were laughing about it the whole way home. Our faces were probably so funny!
DENZEL: Sorry this e-mail is all over the place. But I'm now going to write about Denzel's lesson. He has been working on the word of wisdom and is definitely making improvements. We brought him a calendar so he can set a new date for his baptism.
SUNDAY/TEACHING SUNDAY SCHOOL: Nothing has changed at church. The Sunday school teacher texted us at 9:25 PM on Saturday night and asked if we could teach. As missionaries I don't think we're allowed to say no. So we didn't. It was on service so we just asked a bunch of questions and it went well. Church is at 1:00 now so that's different. We had a potential investigator come to church for the first time. We planned to give him a church tour at 12:15 but at 11:00 he called and said he was there. We were in meetings so the poor guy had to wait about another hour before we came down. We gave him a tour and then taught Restoration with Jill! She was there about 30 mins early :) It went well and we're meeting with him again. It was just so sweet to hear Jill bear her testimony. She told him, "pray to God, and don't give up. Just never stop praying. I pray about 10 times every day and I'm so happy." I couldn't stop smiling when I was listening to her testify. It was so amazing!!! And in Sunday school she gave the closing prayer. Her first prayer in a meeting and she was so nervous but did such a good job! And she gave me a hug after and was like, "I'm sorry that was a bad prayer. I'll keep working on it and I'll get better." Oh I died, "No Jill, that was perfect! You're doing soooo great! AND I'M OBSESSED WITH YOU."
STANDARDS :) We reached it!! Only 7% of our mission did so we were super happy and so blessed! For returned missionaries you might find this interesting. For investigators with baptismal dates, standards is 2 and we have 8! For investigators coming to church it's 2 and we got 4! For finding new investigators for the week it's 2 but we got 4! For having a member present lesson it's 4 and we had 5! And with progressing investigators it's 2 and we have 3! We are seriously so blessed in this area. I NEVER WANT TO LEAVE!
WIND OF DEATH: So it's getting a little bit chilly these days. We were planning on going downtown today but then we walked outside and changed our minds. It's -29 Celsius. So yeah.
SPIRITUAL: I'm reading Alma right now and it's the best. The missionary experiences are amazing!! I can learn so much from Alma the younger and the sons of Mosiah. So I'm reading the Book of Mormon student Manuel with it and it has awesome quotes from General Authorities. When talking about Aaron teaching the stiff-necked people President Eyring explained why we need to reach out to and talk to everyone.
“Why should I speak to anyone about the gospel who seems content? What danger is there to them or to me if I do or say nothing?
“Well, the danger may be hard to see, but it is real, both for them and for us. For instance, at some moment in the world to come, everyone you will ever meet will know what you know now. They will know that the only way to live forever in association with our families and in the presence of our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, was to choose to enter into the gate by baptism at the hands of those with authority from God. They will know that the only way families can be together forever is to accept and keep sacred covenants offered in the temples of God on this earth. And they will know that you knew. And they will remember whether you offered them what someone had offered you”
That last part freaked me out, but it definitely motivated me and my companion. It's so crazy to thing about! Wow, I love the scriptures and the manual. I learn so much from them!!
I love you all and hope you are loving the New Year! :)
